Nigerian entertainer Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz, has explained why he decided to stop actively representing clients in court and pick music.
Speaking on a recent episode of the Behind The Story podcast, Falz noted that combining law and music is possible. However, maintaining an active legal practice while his entertainment profile grew became increasingly challenging.
The 35-year-old studied law at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom and completed his professional training at the Nigerian Law School in Abuja.
He was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2012. Falz first attracted attention in music in 2011 with the release of his debut single “Wahz Up Guy.” He has since built a successful career as a rapper, actor and all-round performer.
He recalled a courtroom incident that underlined the problem. After announcing his appearance, a judge asked in a coded manner whether he was “the one doing something on the side.” At the time, some lawyers already knew him as the son of human rights lawyer Femi Falana, while others did not. Falz confirmed the recognition and was allowed to proceed with the case.
Looking ahead, he realised that greater public recognition would create serious difficulties. Court sessions could become chaotic, clients might question his availability, and his high visibility would distract from proper legal work. These concerns, he said, eventually led him to prioritise music and step away from active practice.
