Gospel singer Madam Ajonamaku has opened up about her personal struggles and the events that led her to set herself on fire.
On a recent episode of the TalkToB Podcast, the singer, whose real name is Ajonamaku Omolabansin, discussed a series of tragedies that began in her childhood and continued into adulthood.
She said her life changed for the worse after losing several family members.
“Our family was a happy one until my father suddenly died. My mom also died; my three siblings died as well,” she said.
Madam Ajonamaku said she felt alone and struggled to cope with all the losses she had faced. She explained that, at the time, she sensed a spiritual force encouraging her to harm herself.
“I burnt myself. That spirit told me what am I still doing alive. The spirit told me to take kerosene and pour it on myself. That made me sick for 10 months,” she said.
She said she faced ridicule while attempting to build her career in the entertainment industry. She also recalled being taken to a studio to record a song, only to be subjected to abuse and mockery.
“Some people took me to the studio to make a song. They abused and made fun of me that I am ugly, poor and barren,” she said.
“In this life, there are spiritual forces but if you have God, they cannot overpower you. You will win.”

The singer also expressed concern for her children’s future, describing them as her biggest worry. Reflecting on her journey, she admitted that she might not have had children if she had foreseen the hardships she would face.
“I am more concerned about my children. If only I had known, I won’t have those children because I know what I went through,” she said.
“I have never been wicked. I have never done evil to anyone. If I ever did, I would have thought this is my reward for the evil I did.
“I have nobody except God. He should interfere because I am tired.”
