Nollywood actor IK Ogbonna has shed light on a rarely discussed issue plaguing modern marriages, the silent power struggles between men and women, particularly in African homes.
Taking to his Instagram story, Ogbonna explained that many tensions in relationships don’t begin as conflict, but as mutual admiration. He said men are often drawn to a woman’s strength, while women are attracted to a man’s confidence. However, over time, this dynamic can shift.
“One of the most unspoken challenges in modern marriages, especially among African men and strong, independent women, is the quiet battle for identity and control,” he wrote.

According to him, these struggles typically emerge when ego meets ego, and pride clashes with independence. What starts as a bond built on admiration gradually turns into a subtle tug-of-war.

“Many African men are raised to lead,” he noted, “but not necessarily taught how to lead alongside a woman who also knows how to lead.”
He added that many women who have worked hard to build their independence are taught to protect it fiercely but not how to be vulnerable without feeling diminished.
Ogbonna believes this lack of guidance often transforms love into a power struggle, not due to a lack of affection, but because neither party was taught how to embrace each other’s strengths without feeling threatened.
“These unspoken battles breed resentment, emotional distance, and ego wars,” he said. “Sadly, most couples never talk about it. They just drift apart.”
