Nigerian Afrobeats star Fireboy DML has reflected on the success of his global smash hit, Peru, stating that he could have found himself in a difficult position if the song had been his first major breakthrough as an artiste.
The YBNL singer, who had already established himself in the Nigerian music industry before the release of Peru, explained that achieving massive international success too early in an artiste’s career can sometimes create enormous
He said: “I would be in big trouble if Peru had been my first international hit song. As an artist, if your breakout song turns out to be an international smash hit, you’d become a one-hit wonder.”
The singer’s comments highlight the challenges that can come with an unexpectedly massive breakout record.
Peru, released in 2021, became one of the biggest songs of Fireboy’s career and gained even wider international recognition following its remix featuring British superstar Ed Sheeran.

The record enjoyed impressive success across several countries and further established Fireboy as one of Afrobeats’ most recognisable voices.
However, Fireboy believes his career benefited from the fact that he had already built a solid musical foundation before Peru became a global phenomenon.

Prior to the song’s success, he had released several popular records and projects, allowing listeners to become familiar with his artistry beyond just one hit.
Meanwhile, Fireboy DML is preparing to enter a new chapter in his career with his forthcoming fifth studio album, ZUKO!.
The singer announced the project in July 2026 as the follow-up to his 2024 album, Adedamola.
Although anticipation for ZUKO! continues to grow, an official release date for the album has not yet been announced publicly.
