Nigerian Afrobeat singer and activist, Seun Kuti, has pushed back against the widespread stereotype that Nigerians are among the biggest scammers in the world.
The musician argued that financial fraud is a global problem and that Africans are often unfairly singled out in conversations about scams.
Using the infamous case of American financier Bernie Madoff as an example, Kuti questioned the scale of fraud associated with Nigeria compared with some of the biggest financial scandals recorded internationally.
He said: “Nigerians are not the biggest scammers. Africans don’t scam at all compared to the global game. Bernie Madoff scammed $65 billion. If you combine all of Nigeria National budgets for a year, it wouldn’t even reach $40 billion.”

However, Kuti did not deny that scams exist in Nigeria, he argued that the global conversation often overlooks massive cases of corporate and financial fraud committed in other parts of the world.

Kuti has also remained in the headlines in 2026 over his public feud with Afrobeats superstar Wizkid. The dispute began after members of Wizkid’s fan base compared the singer to Fela and described him as a “modern-day Fela”.
Kuti strongly rejected the comparison, arguing that it disrespected and diminished his father’s legacy.
The disagreement later became more direct after Wizkid responded publicly during the heated online exchanges.
The situation generated widespread debate among fans and celebrities, particularly over comparisons between the two music icons.
