48 nations will be vying for the prestigious title; however, among the competitors, the most populous black nation, Nigeria, will not be participating in the competition after failing to qualify. It is important to note that Nigeria has hosted several major FIFA tournaments; however, they have never hosted the men’s senior World Cup competition nor the women’s. The country has successfully hosted two major FIFA youth tournaments: the 1999 FIFA World Youth Championship (now known as the FIFA U-20 World Cup) and the 2009 FIFA U-17 World Cup.
