The Nigerian entertainment industry is in mourning following the passing of beloved actor Alexx Ekubo whose full name is Alex Ekubo-Okwaraeke at the age of 40.
The versatile star reportedly died on May 12, 2026, after a battle with kidney cancer.
Born on April 10, 1986, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, to parents from Arochukwu, Abia State, Ekubo stood tall at 6’2” and was known for his charisma and screen presence.
He studied Law at the University of Calabar and later earned a Diploma in Mass Communication and Theatre Arts.
Before acting, he was first runner-up at the 2010 Mr Nigeria pageant. His breakthrough came in 2013 with Weekend Getaway, winning Best Actor in a Supporting Role at the Best of Nollywood Awards. He went on to star in over 100 films, shining in romantic comedies and dramatic roles.

Beyond acting, Ekubor was a model, producer, host, motivational speaker, and humanitarian.
He gained international fame as “Johnny” in Yemi Alade’s hit music video and was inducted into the 2020 MIPAD/United Nations Top 100 Most Influential People of African Descent under 40.
Fluent in Igbo, Hausa, and English, he was admired for his cultural pride and philanthropy.
A devoted family man who recently embraced fatherhood, Ekubo’s resilience, shaped by early life challenges including the loss of his father, inspired many. His sudden death has left fans and colleagues heartbroken.
