2020 Grammys: Nigerians React to Burna Boy’s Loss

The 62nd Grammy awards might be over but the winners list have caused a stir on social media. One of such is Burna Boy‘s loss in the Best World Music Category to Benin’s New York based Legendary singer, Angelique Kidjo.

The news was trailed by mixed reactions from Nigerians on twitter. While some fans have been blasting the organisers mercilessly from coast to coast, a number of others were of the opinion that Burna Boy was not cheated because Angelique Kidjo remains a music Legend.

Angelique Kidjo who beat out Nigeria’s African Giant, Nathalie Joachim, Altin Gun and Bokante to win the “Best World Music Awards” dedicated her award to Burna Boy.

While dedicating her award to the “Anybody” crooner, the singer took the time to praise him for being a milestone for contemporary African music.

Interestingly, Kidjo was featured on Burna Boy‘s “Different,” an amazing song from his fourth studio album “African Giant” which earned him the Grammy nomination.

This marks Kidjo‘s fourth win in the category and fourth Grammy win overall in nine nominations. Her first nominations came in 1995 and her first win in 2007 in the Best Contemporary World Music category. She also picked a Grammy each in the Best World Music Album category in 2014 and 2015 for the albums Eve and Sings respectively.
