3 Things We Learnt From Davido’s Rolling Stone Interview

Davido, recently had a chat with popular American magazine, Rolling Stone and the very-candid music star revealed a bevy of music details.

Below are the three major things we learnt from the interview.

FEM wasn’t released because of the #EndSARS protest

Davido debunked claims by government officials that his latest single, FEM was released for the #EndSARS protest.

Recall that FEM which means “shut up” became the protest’s anthem in October when Nigeria swarmed in thousands across the nation; to demand an end to the now-disbanded special anti-robbery squad (SARS) who were notoriously known for extrajudicial killings and extortions.

During the protest, the hit single was used by protesters to express their anger towards government officials who made empty promises and unsolicited comments.

However, Davido said that the energetic song became the protest song; because it encompassed the feeling of protesters toward the government.

“I didn’t even make that song thinking all that was going to happen. I dropped the record like a month before the protests started, and it just fell in tune to what people were feeling at the time,” he said.

“It just kept on going, and going, and going, and going. And then funny enough, it kind of became the protest song. I remember walking into a government building and [the officials were] like, ‘Ah, Davido, I heard you had gone to make your song for us.’ Like, no, no, no, no. I was like, ‘Nah, I dropped that record before.”

He added : “It’s crazy how everything fell into place. I can’t say I’m happy that us Nigerians have been pushed to the wall to be protesting; but also I can say that I’m pleased to have my song be a tool and a voice for them to just spill out their anger and just release stress. It was a good feeling.”

A Better Time is a better album

Davido‘s fans have patiently been waiting for him to release his third studio album titled A Better Time which he hinted will drop this month. However, he confirmed that his forthcoming album is better than his previous album, A Good Time.

“My sophomore album was called A Good Time, so, obviously, A Better Time, it’s a better album. You know what I’m saying? I took my time. Better visuals, better production, everything as a whole package,” he revealed.

“I’ve never really had time to refocus, sit down, and record a project, because I’m always on tour. I’m always all over the place. For the first time I had the opportunity to sit down and focus with my producers and take our time on each and every song.”

2 more albums in the bag

While speaking on how the events of 2020 affected him, Davido revealed that the pandemic brought positive impact to his career as he was able to record two albums apart from his forthcoming album.

“The only thing I could do was get in the studio. That’s one of the positive things that the pandemic brought to my career. It made me focus more, definitely, being in the studio, having nowhere to go. The only place I could be was at home. So I just made sure I was just recording and recording. I probably recorded like two albums already, apart from A Better Time,” he said.
