Nigerian singer Alexander Abolore Adegbola Akande, popularly known as 9ice, has once again sparked widespread debate on social media after making fresh comments about his spiritual beliefs and the place his parents hold in his life.

The award-winning artiste stirred reactions after declaring that his mother and father are the only “gods” he recognises, a statement that comes just months after he revealed that he has practised as a Babalawo, a Yoruba traditional priest, for nearly two decades.

In a video shared on his Instagram page, 9ice opened up about a deeply personal belief he said he rarely discusses publicly.

He said: “Today I’ll tell you something I don’t really talk about, but I’ll talk today. I love my mum, I love my dad, my god is my mum, my father is my god,”

The singer later expanded on his remarks in the comment section, explaining that the honour and reverence many people direct towards an unseen God should first be given to the parents who brought them into the world and raised them.

He also made it clear that he does not subscribe to the worship of other spiritual beings.

He wrote: “I don’t believe in inferior Gods.”

The controversy comes on the heels of another viral moment earlier this year when 9ice criticised what he described as Nigeria’s excessive religious culture.

During the April video, he questioned the impact of decades of intense religious activities on national development.

He said: “You’ll leave Nigeria and go to Mecca to go and lick rock all in the name of Kabba”.

In the same video, the singer made another revelation that drew significant attention, disclosing that he had been a practising Babalawo for more than 18 years.
