A “Hello Kitty” Movie is in the works!

Sanrio – the Japanese lifestyle brand that first introduced the “Hello Kitty” cartoon character in 1974 before it became a global hit – announced on Tuesday with New Line Cinema and FlynnPictureCo that they have gone into a partnership to produce an English Language Hello Kitty film which will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros.

The movie, although currently untitled, will signify the franchise’s first feature to hit theatres worldwide. The project also represents the first time Sanrio will be granting a big American studio the right to its characters.

In a statement, President and CEO of Sanrio, Shintaro Tsuji said: “I am extremely pleased that Hello Kitty and other popular Sanrio characters will be making their Hollywood debut. Hello Kitty has long been a symbol of friendship and we hope this film will only serve to grow that circle of friendship around the world.”

Casting details and a release date for the movie are yet to be announced however, there are indications that there is an ongoing search for writers and creative talent to feature in the movie.
