Nollywood actress, Nafisat Abolad, has written an open letter to the leaders of Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN) expressing her concerns about the handling of news regarding the passing of industry colleagues.

In the heartfelt letter, Abolade highlighted the insensitivity of announcing a colleague’s demise on social media before informing the family.

She wrote: “Over the years, I’ve noticed that whenever we lose one of us, the sad news is heard by their family members from actors’ social media, which blogs carry immediately. I believe this is very insensitive and probably dangerous to their health. I mean, imagine finding out your daughter, son, sister, or brother is dead from social media.  With what I saw at the hospital yesterday, where we lost our beautiful ALLWELL (May Allah forgive her sins and make Jannah a place of rest for her), her family haven’t even gotten to the hospital before the news went viral.

The young actress urged TAMPAN leaders to consider implementing a policy where news of a member’s passing is kept confidential until the family has been officially informed and authorizes a public announcement.
