Amazon drops trailer for Mary J Blige documentary

Amazon Studios have released the artwork and official trailer for the Mary J Blige documentary titled My Life.

The documentary, an 82 minute film is set to center on the life and career of the nine-time Grammy-winning recording artist and Academy Award nominated singer and actress.

My life is directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Vanessa Roth with co-producers, Ashaunna K. Ayars and Q. Nicole Jackson as well as executive producers Mary J. Blige, Sean “Diddy” Combs, Tara Long, Mark Ford, Kevin Lopez, Jeffrey Harleston, and Jody Gerson.

Mary J Blige dropped her sophmore project, My Life In 1994. The album featured classic songs like “I’m Goin’ Down,” “You Gotta Believe” and “Be Happy.” The album was a breakthrough for Blige, who was battling depression at this point as well as a drug and alcohol problem. The listening public were given a raw story of abuse, mental health, and addiction.

My Life went triple platinum and won the Billboard Music Award for Top R&B Album in 1995. It also received a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Album.

“My Life is probably my darkest album at one of the darkest times I’ve had,” Blige admits in the trailer. “Most of the time I was just depressed and didn’t want to live. I had it all inside and I was able to sing it and write it, and I didn’t know that so many people felt the same way.” She also added.

We also hear from executive producer, Diddy, who says “Nobody sounds like her,” as well as Blige’s I Can Do Bad All By Myself co-star Taraji P. Henson. She added that Blige “made it okay for people to say it’s alright to be me.”

The official synopsis reveals that viewers will see Blige speak about “the demons and blessings” behind the album’s songs.

The documentary is set for June 25, 2021 on Amazon Prime.
