Alabi Ogundepo, a veteran Yoruba actor cum traditional poet, has died at the age of 84.
Dupe Ogundepo-Falana, the deceased’s daughter, announced the sad news in a statement, saying the master chanter of Ijala (hunter’s poetry) died on Monday, August 24.
The late actor’s family described Ogundepo as “a remarkable literary voice whose poetry and writings reflected his deep appreciation of Yoruba culture, tradition, language, history and the human experience.”
The statement also extended gratitude to individuals, institutions, traditional leaders, and literary communities who have reached out with condolences and support.
The family further requested privacy and prayers as they mourn their father, adding that the funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.

Ogundepo’s death comes just a day after the passing of Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo.
Ogogo’s death came less than a week after his family disclosed that he was suffering from stage four cancer and appealed to medical professionals and hospitals for assistance.
He was 66 years old.
On August 17, Kira and her sister, Lima, made separate appeals for help, explaining that the family was seeking access to appropriate medical treatment for the actor.
Kira later disclosed that doctors had informed the family that chemotherapy was no longer an option because of the advanced stage of the illness.
Ogogo was born on October 31, 1959, in Ilaro, Ogun State. He became known for his work in Yoruba language films and had a career spanning more than four decades.
