Banky W: ‘The Government is Being Inconsiderate and Dangerous’

Actor, singer, and music executive Banky W has condemned the Nigerian government’s decision to enforce the NIN registration deadline in the middle of a pandemic; calling them “completely reckless, inconsiderate, and dangerous”.

Banky W said this in a tweet; reacting to the swathing number of people crowding and queueing up to get their National Identification Numbers. “In the middle of the pandemic, this is how our Nigerian government has its citizens queuing up to get their NIN numbers.”

“Completely reckless, inconsiderate, and dangerous. Then tomorrow the NCDC will release covid infection rates and say social distancing. This country sha. Kai,” the politician tweeted.

Banky W’s tweets are coming on the heels of the federal government deadline issued for citizens without the NIN. The NIN is issued by the NIMC upon enrolment into the National Identity Database. The government uses this number to capture an individual’s records.

But we are in the second wave of COVID-19; with the soaring numbers of coronavirus cases and the resultant health crisis in the country. As such, the decision of the government to enforce the NIN process now is arbitrary at best and will prove deadly at worst.
