Veteran Nigerian entertainer and activist Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has opened up about the realities of spending nearly five decades with the same partner, admitting that long-term marriage can sometimes become repetitive and predictable.

Speaking during an interview on Yanga 89.9FM, the outspoken media personality reflected on his 48-year marriage and candidly described the experience as occasionally boring, comparing it to eating the same meal every day for years.

According to Charly Boy, familiarity naturally sets in after spending decades with one person, and the excitement that often characterises the early stages of a relationship can gradually fade.

Using a humorous analogy, he likened his marriage to eating Egusi soup continuously for years, suggesting that even something enjoyable can become routine over time.

He said: “I have been married to one woman for 48 years. It is very boring. Imagine eating the same Egusi for years, it’s boring now”.

Despite this, he stressed that enduring relationships require commitment and perseverance.

The veteran entertainer noted that every marriage comes with its own challenges, periods of monotony and moments that test both partners.

However, he maintained that successful marriages are built on the willingness of both people to keep working through those realities.

Charly Boy also shared one of the principles that has helped sustain his marriage over the years.

According to him, he and his wife deliberately avoid involving outsiders in their disagreements, believing that third-party opinions often complicate issues rather than solve them.

Speaking against infidelity, he emphasised that cheating can destroy the trust that holds a relationship together, making it difficult for couples to maintain a healthy bond.

He also shared a controversial view on marriage, stating that he does not believe love alone is what sustains a relationship.

According to him, lasting marriages are built on factors beyond romance, including commitment, understanding, sacrifice and the daily effort required to keep a partnership strong.
