Nigerian Afrobeats star BNXN, formerly Buju, has fired a strong response at American rapper Fat Joe after the latter referred to him as “fake Buju” during a recent podcast appearance alongside reggae icon Buju Banton.
In the viral clip, Fat Joe claimed that he and others had to publicly diss the Nigerian singer on television, allegedly forcing him to drop the “Buju” name noting that “there’s only one Buju Banton.”
The comment was widely perceived as dismissive of BNXN’s artistry and the African music scene.

BNXN did not take the remark lightly as he took to X (formerly Twitter) and posted a scathing reply: “The hate in your heart and your misinformation about African music and its artists is why your chromosomes are all fucked up. Educate yourself bozo. @fatjoe”

Many fans rallied behind BNXN, accusing Fat Joe of ignorance and disrespect toward Afrobeats and its contributors. Others defended the veteran rapper, arguing that it was light-hearted banter taken too seriously.
BNXN, who rose to prominence with hits like “Outside,” “Mood,” and collaborations with artists such as Wizkid and Burna Boy, originally used the stage name Buju before rebranding to BNXN in 2022. He has previously explained that the name was inspired by “Beauty Underneath Just Understood” and was never intended to copy Buju Banton.
