Bolaji Ogunmola: Creating Spaces for Dark Faces in Nollywood

Bolaji Ogunmola

Bolaji Ogunmola is an embodiment of talent, class, and charisma. While she charms her viewers with her acting skills and gift of gait, it’s pivotal to acknowledge that her chocolate complexion equally enchants audiences.

One of the few thespians in an exclusive club of those promoting dark complexion and the framework of African beauty. The average African, or in this context, Nigerian, is of dark (or its varieties) complexion; however, in the Nigerian entertainment industry, black women often seem to be sidelined and subtly ignored from taking lead roles in movies.

Nowadays, movie producers prefer women who are of croole, caramel, or light complexioned, as for the darkskinned women, they have to either play the supporting role where they are the understanding girlfriend (whatever this means) or the loud-mouthed friend to the lead character who is light-skinned and too soft to speak up for herself.

Atypical of modern-day Nollywood.

Due to the pressure to be accepted and dubbed beautiful, several female actors, including some of their male counterparts, have decided to engage in bleaching their skin or using the more acceptable ‘toned’ their complexion to appeal to a broader audience and movie executives. You can’t blame them, the entertainment business is predominantly about physical appearance and beauty, hence, it’s almost impossible to take away complexion from the conversation.

Though controversial, the truth is, viewers would more often than not prefer to watch a light-complexioned monotonous actress to a dark skinned actress exuding talent and professionalism. I can’t explain this, but it’s simply preference; however, one actress has been able to defy all odds in modern Nollywood and carve her path in a divisive entertainment industry.
