Legendary Nigerian musician King Sunny Ade has reflected on his royal background and his lifelong love for music, explaining why he chose a career in entertainment despite being born into a royal family.
The iconic singer said that although royalty was part of his heritage, sitting on a throne was never what he truly wanted.
According to the 79-year-old singer, music has always been his passion, and that passion eventually made him one of Nigeria’s most celebrated musicians.
He said:“I was born into royalty. But they made me to be the King of world music. I don’t want to be on the throne. I love to play music.”

King Sunny Ade also spoke about the roots of the sound he plays, explaining that his music draws inspiration from traditional Yoruba sounds and musical practices.
He described Juju music as a collection of sounds and influences passed down through generations.
He added: “And the music I am playing now is a piece of music being taken from different shrines,” he explained. “The name given to it was Juju music, Yoruba music.”
He further described the interactive nature of the music, particularly the exchange between musicians during performances.

According to him, the rhythm and instruments create a form of musical conversation, where one performer responds to another.
