Comedian Bovi Ugboma has been criticised for calling for the release of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu.

This comes after a video of the comedian at one of his shows in UK surfaced, showing moments he questioned the severity of Ekweremadu’s crime, asking the audience, “was he forced?”, a remark that did not sit well with many of his viewers.

Reacting, netizens on social media called out the comedian. One attendee wrote, “Had to leave Bovi’s show when he started appealing for the release of Ike Ekweremadu. He just ruined the entire show with that lousy moment.”

Others supported the reaction, criticising the comedian for using his platform to defend a convicted individual.

The case involved a Nigerian trader who was brought to London for a kidney transplant connected to Ekweremadu’s daughter’s health needs.

Ekweremadu received a nine-year, eight-month prison sentence. His wife, Beatrice Ekweremadu, was sentenced to four years and six months and has returned to Nigeria after serving part of her sentence.

The Nigerian government has tried to have Ekweremadu transferred to serve his sentence in Nigeria, but UK authorities have declined the request.
