Nigerian music superstar Burna Boy has achieved another historic milestone, becoming only the second Nigerian artiste ever to perform at a FIFA World Cup opening ceremony.

The Grammy Award-winning singer joined a select group of global entertainers during the opening ceremony of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which officially kicked off on June 11.

Over the years, the Afrofusion star has built a global reputation through chart-topping hits, sold-out international tours and numerous awards, helping to elevate African music on the world stage.

However, with his performance, Burna Boy joins legendary Afrobeat musician Femi Kuti as the only Nigerian artistes to have performed at a FIFA World Cup opening ceremony.

Femi Kuti made history in 2010 when he performed during the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

The tournament was a landmark event as it marked the first time the World Cup was hosted on African soil.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is already being described as one of the most ambitious editions in the competition’s history.

The tournament features an expanded format with 48 national teams and matches spread across several host cities in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
