Burna Boy: Referring to all African Songs as Afrobeat is Unfair

Popular singer, Burna Boy has said it is unfair that all African songs are being classified as Afrobeat.

Speaking on on Hot97 New York show, Ebro In The Morning, Burna Boy explained that African musicians doesn’t do Afrobeat alone, and classifying all their songs under the Afrobeat genre doesn’t do justice to the real situation.

He said, “using ‘Afrobeats’ as an umbrella term for African music is not fair. It’s not fair to just join everybody… It’s almost like joining Hip-Hop, R&B and Dancehall into one thing and call it ‘Ameribeats.’ It doesn’t do justice to what’s really going on, but at the same time, we have to start from somewhere.”

The self-styled African Giant, who recently released Twice As Tall, his much-anticipated fifth studio project, also said just like Nigerian music legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti created Afrobeat, he created Afro-fusion.

During the interview, Burna Boy explained that his genre of music is totally different from Afro-beat, and he’s the creator of it.

“Afro-fusion is me, I created that. The same way Afrobeat is Fela Kuti – he created that, you know. I don’t play every instrument… I’m not Fela, basically. I’m Burna Boy and we go about things very differently. It’s a different genre, it just comes from Africa basically,” he explained.
