Nollywood actress Kemi Afolabi has sparked widespread reactions with a pointed Ramadan message criticising those who rush to donate to online NGOs and public feeding programs while ignoring needy family members and close community ties.
In her recent Instagram post, the actress challenged the practice of prioritising distant or random acts of charity over immediate responsibilities.

Her post reads; “Did you check up on your family members, hungry neighbors, widow, widower and people who lost their jobs in your community to see if they need help with feeding this Ramadan before donating to random NGO accounts online all in the name of feeding people for Ramadan.”
The actress’s post aligns with broader Ramadan discussions in Nigeria, where many emphasise that true Zakat and Sadaqah (Zakat is obligatory upon every Muslim. Whereas Sadaqah is an encouraged, voluntary deed) should start with verifiable, personal impact, especially amid economic hardships that leave some families silently struggling.
