Chimamanda Adichie Loses Father at 88

Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Award-winning Nigerian author and activist, has lost James Adichie her father to an undisclosed illness in Anambra. He was 88.

According to TheNation, the professor of statistics died on Wednesday night at the Chira Memorial Hospital situated within Awkuzu Oyi local government where he was admitted to.

Before his death Nwoye was a native of Abba in Anambra and doubled as a retired academic of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).

Born in 1932, Nwoye attended the Nimo Primary School in the state but would later move to Akwuzu Primary School where he completed his standard six.

After his primary education, he attended Our Lady’s High School, Onitsha, 1947-48, and Yaba Technical Institute (now College of Technology) Lagos, 1948-50. He also attended University College, Ibadan, 1957-60, University of California, Berkeley, USA, 1963-66.

Just recently, Chimamanda recounted how her family lost everything during the Nigerian Civil War (Biafra War).

“I didn’t choose to write about Biafra. Biafra chose me. My family survived the war,” she said.

She continued: “My parents lost everything they owned. My brother Chucks was born during the war.

“I would say that my family’s trajectory was sharply divided and changed by the war.  For me, there was before the war, and after the war. I was born seven years after the war ended.

“But I always felt that it was present in our lives. Both of my grandfathers died in it and I grew up hearing about them. I think I just have always wanted to make sense of this part of my history.”
