Nigerian singer David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido has distanced himself from the “City Boy” group, insisting that he had previously spoken out against the government.

This comes after the singer engaged in a heated exchange with a social media user after calling on entertainers to speak more about the challenges facing the country.

In the post, Davido admitted that entertainers, including himself, had not done enough to speak out against injustice and the worsening state of affairs in Nigeria.

He added that Nigerian entertainers must begin using their platforms to draw attention to the problems affecting citizens.

He wrote, “I can’t lie, we entertainers… we dey f**k up, I won’t lie, including me. We need to speak up. It’s too much injustice going on. Our country don go.”

Reacting to the singer’s remark, some praised the singer for admitting that celebrities should do more, while others questioned his sincerity.

One user, Princess Luna, accused Davido of insincerity, linked him to a political group, and suggested that his statement was performative.

“Na God go punish you and your family. Go and do that performative rubbish in your City Boys group chat and get out of my face with all this pretentious nonsense. Na foolish Nigerians I blame,” she wrote.

Responding to the criticism, Davido said he was not part of any “City Boy” group and insisted that he had spoken against the government in the past.

The singer also said that when he criticised the government during an appearance on American media, many Nigerians attacked him for doing so.

“I no dey part of anyCity Boy group. When I called out the government on American media, you guys rained curses on me,” Davido wrote.

He added that his relationship with “ST” was only personal and did not mean he belonged to any political group.

“I’ve been friends with ST for years and that’s where it stops, and I call and complain to him all the time, even in person.

“God punish your generation,” the singer added
