D’banj: Over 13,000 People Petition UN To Take Action Against Singer

No fewer than 13,000 people have signed an online petition against embattled singer Dapo Oyebanjo aka D’banj, for allegedly raping one Seyitan Babatayo.

In less than 24 hours it was initiated, the petition which inches closer to its 15,000-signature target, sought the removal of the music star as the international organisation’s Youth Ambassador.

The petition read partly; “We call on the United Nations, and United Nations Women Africa organisations to remove Nigerian artiste Mr. Dapo Oyebanjo as a youth ambassador and distance themselves from his actions following the sponsored kidnap of Seyitan who accused D’banj of rape and sexual assault which happened in 2018.

“Women in Nigeria are increasingly at risk of sexual violence and the United Nations and United Nations Women Africa as an entity commited to the empowerment of women should not be seen to associate themselves with alleged rapists, abusers and kidnappers.

“We ask the United Nations and United Nations Women Africa to support and lend their influence in helping Seyitan get justice for the abuse she endured in 2018 and the harassment and bullying in the past weeks.”

How D’banj’s trouble started

Two weeks ago, D’banj was called out on social media and accused of rape. After over a week of silence, D’banj responded to the allegations in a letter, saying the rape allegation was false and an embarrassment to his wife.

Following the singer’s response, the accuser later recanted her statement. Hours later, her lawyers came out in her defense, saying Babatayo did so under duress and was forced to delete the tweets in which she made the accusation.
