Falz Recounts Nigerian Judge’s Reaction After Recognising him in Court

Nigerian musician Folarin Falana, known as Falz, recently shared a story from the start of his career when he was juggling law and music.

In an interview with Jermaine, Falz said he worked at his father Femi Falana’s law firm while also trying to grow his music career.

He explained that in the legal field, people expect lawyers not to have another active career at the same time.

The singer said he had been to court several times and once met a judge who seemed to know about his music career.

Falz said he introduced himself to the judge as a lawyer for his client, and then the judge made a subtle comment about his work outside the courtroom.

He explained that the judge did not mention music directly but hinted at it in a roundabout way.

Falz said he confirmed he was the person the judge meant, and then the hearing went on.

He said: “There was a day in court I announced my appearance, ‘With profound respect, my Lord, Folarin Falana appearing for the plaintiff’. And the judge said, ‘Council, are you not the one doing something else on the side?’ He said it in a coded way.”

Falz has talked about managing both his law and music careers. After being called to the Nigerian Bar in 2012, he worked as a lawyer for about two years before deciding to focus on music full time. During his National Youth Service Corps programme, he worked at the Ministry of Justice and later joined his father’s law firm.

Falz studied law at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom and later attended the Nigerian Law School in Abuja. He started his professional music career in 2009 and released his first album, Wazup Guy, in 2014. Since then, he has become one of Nigeria’s top rappers and actors.
