A decade on, fans salute the late Amy Winehouse

On Friday, fans of the late British singer, Amy Winehouse gathered outside her former home in London to pay their respects on the 10th anniversary of her death.

Winehouse died on July 23, 2011 at the age of 27 from alcohol poisoning. The music star’s untimely death came after years of battling addiction and an eating disorder.

A shrine was created at the house where well-wishers adorned with messages, flowers, balloons and pictures as Winehouse’s songs played in the background. A red rose was also placed on the bronze statue in the singer’s trademark hairstyle.

Fans also left messages of condolences at the shrine, expressing their sadness at her passing.

Ten years on from her death, fans of the singer still remember what a talented artist Winehouse was. 26-year-old Avi Vyas, one of the well-wishers at the home recalled “crying my eyes out on the day she passed”.

“Now, after 10 years, it’s my moment to pay my condolences,” He said.

“Looking at her fall has made us realise that we’re all humans and we need to treat each other with respect,” Vyas also added. “It makes me realize how important it is to maintain your own integrity and inner strength.”

“I want her to be remembered as someone who represents who we are as Camden. I want people to remember her as the jazz girl who made it big” He said.

The Jazz After Dark bar in central London, now a portrait gallery in her honour thanks to owner and artist Sam Shaker. The bar was regularly visited by Amy Winehouse. Paintings of her deck the walls alongside photos of Shaker posing with Winehouse.

“All she ate was chicken wings, meatballs and tomato salsa. She never used a knife and fork — her face was full of tomato,” 70-year-old Shaker said. “Amy always trusted me to protect her. We were here to defend Amy with our life. I was dreaming to find a talent like Amy. In 100 years, everybody will remember her songs.” He also said.
