The Federal Government has announced plans to begin preparations for Nigeria’s 2026 Detty December festivities as early as March, in a bid to improve organisation, boost tourism, and address challenges recorded during previous editions.
Hannatu Musawa, Minister of Art, Culture and the Creative Economy, disclosed this while speaking on MIC ON, a podcast hosted by journalist Seun Okinbaloye.
According to her, the 2025 season delivered more gains than setbacks, with strong tourism inflows and positive economic impact, even though several logistical problems remained unresolved.

Detty December has become synonymous with Nigeria’s vibrant end-of-year celebrations, particularly in Lagos, featuring concerts, parties, festivals, and cultural events that attract visitors from across the world.
However, Musawa acknowledged that the last edition was hampered by a shortage of accommodation, inflated prices by some service providers, and severe traffic congestion.

She stressed the need for better regulation to preserve the appeal of the festivities, warning that unchecked pricing could make the season elitist and discourage potential visitors.
The minister also revealed plans to expand activities beyond Lagos to other states, including Calabar, Enugu, and Plateau, in order to spread economic benefits nationwide.

Musawa further noted that the completion of a new airport in Lagos would enhance the travel experience, while calling for increased government investment in infrastructure, hospitality, and creative funding to sustain the growth of the annual celebrations.
