Founder of WAKE UP! Art Exhibition Explains Idea Behind Second Edition

Awele Onwordi, founder of WAKE UP! and a multidisciplinary artist, has explained the second edition of the contemporary art and photography exhibition will pay tribute to Nigerian youth and the growing street culture.

According to Onwordi, the exhibition, themed “Young, Wild, Free,” will run from September 5 to 11 and celebrate the creativity, resilience, freedom, and cultural impact of Nigerian youth.

The exhibition will also explore social and economic issues through art, music, fashion, skateboarding, photography, and community activities.

The event will also highlight and support artistic practices inspired by youth and street culture, showcasing works from “density and superglider house”.

The founder added that Nigerian youths continue to shape various parts of society, even in challenging economic and political times.

She said “Young, Wild and Free” was created to recognise their contributions and give them more visibility and opportunities.

“Despite economic instability, limited opportunities and socio-political challenges, Nigerian youth continue to shape culture through music, fashion, art, skateboarding, raves, photography and community,” she said.

“Young, Wild and Free exists to celebrate Nigerian youth while also creating a platform that supports and amplifies them.”

‎The exhibition is scheduled to be held at the Angel and Muse Gallery, Ikoyi axis of Lagos and will open from September 5 to September 11.

The exhibiting artists include Ajilore Kehinde, Chuka Onwordi, ZIDYEP, Franklyn Okoye, Awele Onwordi, Oluchi Kogolo and Kozetuo Apeji.
