How It All Began

Before becoming a juggernaut in the entertainment industry, Perry failed to gather enough of a crowd to watch his stage plays and dramas. It was reported that in the 1990s, he spent his last $12,000 staging a play. Only 30 people came. He couldn’t pay rent, so he moved into his car.
Perry went through a phase where he was homeless and struggled to feed. For six years, Perry kept rewriting and restaging the same show.
Eventually, in 1998, it finally sold out.
Perry is the creator and performer of Mabel “Madea” Simmons, a tough elderly woman, and also portrays her brother Joe Simmons and her nephew Brian Simmons. Madea’s first appearance was in I Can Do Bad All by Myself (1999), staged in Chicago.
That breakthrough led to Madea box-office hits and ownership of his work. In 2019, he opened a 330-acre studio in Atlanta, built without outside backing on land once used by the Confederate army.
He later sheltered Harry and Meghan and became godfather to their daughter.
