FULL LIST: Nigerian Stars Lose Big at 2026 BET Awards

Top Nigerian stars, Asake, Burna Boy, Wizkid and Tems have lost their respective nominations at the  2026 BET Awards.

The award ceremony, which was established by Black Entertainment Television in 2001 to celebrate outstanding achievements by Black entertainers across music, sports, television, and film, saw US songwriter Teyana Taylor emerge as one of the biggest winners of the night.

Wizkid and Asake were nominated for ‘Best Group’ but lost to Clipse. Clipse, the hip-hop duo, also won ‘Best Collaboration’ with Kendrick Lamar in a category that featured Burna Boy.

Nigerian musician, Tems

Tems was nominated in three categories but did not win any. She lost ‘Best Female R&B/Pop Artist’ to Kehlani, the ‘BET Her Award’ to Doechii featuring SZA for ‘Girl, Get Up,’ and the ‘Viewers’ Choice Award’ to Mariah the Scientist for ‘Burning Blue’.

Teyana Taylor had a strong showing at the event. She won ‘Best Actress,’ ‘Video Director of the Year,’ and ‘Fashion Vanguard.’ She was also honored with the ‘Icon of the Year’ award.

Grammy award winning singer Burna Boy

Tems also performed ‘What You Need’ at the BET Awards. Wearing a white gown, she was joined by Adam Blackstone on piano, a full band, and six backup singers.

“I need to be alone now, I need to be alone. Your love is not my lifeline, your love is not my home,” she sings.

“Returning you, you’rе not mine, to me, you don’t belong. I’m bеtter on my own, you’re better when you’re gone.”
