Gen Z Directors Storm Hollywood and Dominate the Box Office

Hollywood is experiencing a changing of the guard as Gen Z filmmakers prove they can attract audiences and deliver major box-office hits. Two young directors in particular, Kane Parsons and Curry Barker, have emerged as the faces of a new generation reshaping the movie industry.

At just 20 years old, Kane Parsons has made history with Backrooms, the horror blockbuster adapted from his viral YouTube series.

Produced by A24, the film debuted with a massive $81.4 million domestic opening weekend and an impressive $118 million global debut, becoming the biggest opening in the studio’s history. The achievement also made Parsons the youngest filmmaker ever to debut at No. 1 at the North American box office.

Not far behind is 26-year-old filmmaker Curry Barker, whose supernatural horror film Obsession has become one of the year’s most profitable movies. Made on a budget of less than $1 million, the film opened to $17.2 million domestically and more than $24 million worldwide in its first weekend.

Since then, it has continued to grow through strong word-of-mouth and social media buzz, grossing approximately $148 million worldwide, including more than $104 million in the United States.

The success of Parsons and Barker signals a major shift in Hollywood.

Both directors built audiences online before stepping into mainstream filmmaking, and their box-office triumphs show that internet-born creators are now capable of competing with and even outperforming some of the industry’s biggest franchises.
