
Popular Nollywood actress, Genevieve Nnaji has been recognised at the prestigious Women in Cinema gala organised by the Red Sea Film Foundation during the 79th edition of the Cannes Film Festival in France.
Eelive.ng reported that the glamorous event, held on May 13, 2026, at the famous Hotel du Cap on the French Riviera, celebrates influential female filmmakers and creatives from Africa, Asia, and the Arab world.
Genevieve was among six women honoured for their contributions to the global film industry.
This year’s edition marked a significant moment for Africa, with three African women receiving recognition for the first time.
Moroccan filmmaker Laïla Marrakchi and Rwandan director Marie-Clémentine Dusabejambo were also celebrated alongside the Nollywood star.
The foundation praised Genevieve for her immense impact on African cinema and her role in helping Nollywood gain international recognition.

Her acclaimed directorial debut, Lionheart, made history as the first Nigerian movie acquired on Netflix and was later selected as Nigeria’s entry for the Academy Awards.

Beyond her acting success, the actress was also commended for her efforts in promoting African storytelling on a global scale through film production and creative development.
Genevieve turned heads at the gala in a dramatic all-black outfit featuring a sculpted, structured top with oversized sleeves and a matching floor-length skirt crafted from rich silk taffeta fabric.
She completed the sophisticated look with subtle diamond jewellery, a crystal-studded black clutch, sleek middle-parted hair, and soft, glamorous makeup.

Other notable names recognised in the 2026 Women in Cinema lineup include Indian actress and singer Tara Sutaria, Indonesian filmmaker Kamila Andini, and Saudi actress-writer Aixa Kay.
