HBO renews Gossip Girl for second season

HBO Max have announced that they’ve decided to renew Gossip Girl for a second season.

This news comes after the mid season finale dropped on the streaming platform on August 12. The first season of the show was broken down into two parts. The first six episodes all premiered on HBO Max and the final six episodes will be released in November.

This renewal was expected as according to Deadline, the show’s numbers stacked up to expectations. Gossip Girl became the most-watched HBO Max original series ever on its debut weekend. The show also took over social media, as it went up to the No. 1 trending spot on Twitter on its premiere day and gained around 15 billion impressions on TikTok.

The show is a reboot of the original Gossip Girl series. It’s developed by Joshua Safran who wrote and produced the original series.

Before the show launched in July, Safran said the idea that made him want to do the revived show was when he thought of making the teachers at the school Gossip Girl.

“It’s a be-careful-what-you-wish-for story,” Safran said. “It’s a cautionary tale. We will be tracking not just what Gossip Girl does to the kids, but what being Gossip Girl does to them. And it is incredibly messy and morally compromised, obviously.”

Furthermore, it looks like Safran is already planning for many more seasons. “I definitely would love to keep the show going,” He told Harper’s Bazaar before the renewal was l confirmed. “I engineered it so that every season is a semester, so that we didn’t get into the problem the first show got into, which was by Season 3, they had to go to college. Which, at the time, I think was the right decision. When you look back, then, of course, you could have stayed at high school longer. If every season is a semester and they’re going to be juniors now, they would go to college in Season 5.”
