How I started my record label- Olamide

YBNL (Yahoo Boy No Laptop) Boss, Olamide, has revealed how he started the record label.

The rapper, In an interview on the Apple Music ‘Africa Now’ podcast, Olamide said he started the label to avoid extravagant spending.

“The world is in love with my stuff. I am grateful for it but now it is time to make sure I reinvest in that same thing that is making you love and appreciate me,” he said.

“It used to be just passion but it is high time I step up, reinvest and make this a proper business. I set up my own label and started signing artistes because I did not want all that money to just go wasted on ballin’ and all that.

“All that money had to go back into the grind, man. That is how the whole thing started.”

In 2012, Olamide founded YBNL.

The label has produced musicians like Lil Kesh, Adekunle Gold, Fireboy, and Chinko Ekun.

In July 2021, Olamide in a chat the Grammy explained why he ventured into music production.

He had said “UY Scuti album was my major [foray] into Logic. I started production because sometimes I don’t know how to explain to everyone, apart from a few people, how I’m feeling.

“But most times, I’m not always at home. I’m out on the road and don’t have the luxury of doing the producer’s life.

“So I have to always make sure I record my ideas and tell my guys to teach me one or two things. I’ll make something tiny and skeletal, just put down the idea.”
