I Was Conceived Through Rape- Helen Paul as Comedienne Dedicates PhD to Mum

Comedienne and actress Helen Paul bagged a doctorate degree in Theatre Arts from the University of Lagos on Thursday April 4th in an epoch-making ceremony – she is the first woman among her peers to earn such a degree.

Amidst the pomp and celebrations, Paul revealed a very private detail about her life to the public when she dedicated her degree to her mother through a caption on her Instagram.

In the caption, she shared that her mother had conceived her through rape and never failed to stand by her when family members called her a bastard and a never-do-well.

She wrote: “I HELEN PAUL dedicate this to my mum, you gave birth to me out of rape, they told you I wouldn’t amount to anything. I grew up hearing from family members; being called a “Bastard” and each time I asked you, you said (Olorun lon wo omo werey, Olorun ma wo e meaning God watches the child of a mad person, he’d watch over you)

Mummy I want to know I love you, I might not buy you Benz now because I don’t have a Pant yet but this certificate will amount to something great. They say Fame is nothing but Grace is everything and I pray for grace in everything I do

I’m not a Cele member but Late Osofa gave me the name and everything Late Osofa said about Helen Paul is coming to pass. I dedicate this to every mother, may God make you strong enough to survive and enjoy the fruit of your labour…”

Helen Paul broke out as a comic character on a radio program known as “Wetin Dey” on Radio Continental 102.3FM, Lagos where she was known as “Tatafo” – a witty kid that addresses and lampoons societal issues in a satirical manner. She also presented programmes on TV Continental and Naija FM 102.7.
