Nigerian music icon Don Jazzy, in a rare and deeply personal conversation on The Echo Podcast hosted by consultant and global speaker Olushola Olaleye, has traced his extraordinary journey from a young boy surrounded by art to the architect of Africa’s most successful record label, Mavin Records.
The music executive who was born into a creative household where his father managed a production company and co-founded the Artists Managers Association of Nigeria (AMAN), while his mother sang in the church choir, pointed out that music is never a choice for him. “I didn’t find music; music found me,” he said.

From childhood, Don Jazzy mastered percussion, drums, and bass guitar yet, stressed that talent alone wasn’t enough. Discipline, financial responsibility, and simply “showing up” every day were the real foundations of his success. He reminisced on his humble days working as a security guard in London with gratitude rather than regret: “It started with showing up. The rest was alignment.”

The conversation turned to one of the most talked-about moments in African music history, the 2012 split of Mo’Hits Records and the birth of Mavin Records the very same day.
Don Jazzy however, described the transition saying “At Mo’Hits we had passion, but no structure. At Mavin, it’s both or nothing,” pointing out that the philosophy turned Mavin into an artist-first powerhouse built on creativity, strategy, and sustainability.
