Kemi Afolabi, the popular Nollywood actress has taken to social media to share her ongoing battle with Lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease that has drastically changed her life.
Speaking on her health journey, the thespian revealed that at the height of her illness, she believed the end had come, as she credited her survival to ”the power of God” and the unwavering support of her family.
She said, “I couldn’t eat or drink. I was on oxygen to breathe. I had already bought the place I would be buried and even written my will, but God said it was not yet time to go.”
The actress further explained that the disease called Lupus is a little-known but deadly condition that causes the body’s immune system to attack its own organs, impairing their function.
Afolabi recalled the excruciating joint pain across her body, noting that the pain that comes with childbirth is little as compared to what she endured.
“Childbirth pain is little compared to the pain of Lupus,” she noted. She also disclosed the multiple misdiagnoses at Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) before traveling abroad, where she was finally diagnosed.

She disclosed that she now travels overseas regularly for treatment and receives daily injections. She admitted that, beyond her physical challenges, hurtful public speculation also took a toll on her.
She said: “When it first started with me, all the joints in my body gave me intense pain. They were diagnosing different diseases for me at LUTH until I traveled out and was told it’s Lupus. Lupus has no cure I am still managing it with medications. I travel abroad every now and then because of it. I get an injection every day. I can’t be under light for a long time like I used to when acting. People were saying so many things but the one that got to me most was when someone said I have been used spiritually’’
