Acapella, a popular Nigerian comedian who is Bennet Daniel, has mentioned that he has been receiving several death threats for claiming that Lagos smells.

The ongoing conundrum was instigated after influencer Scott Iguma posted a viral video describing Lagos as “smelling” and full of “big mosquitoes.”

The Lagos State Commissioner for Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, has since taken to social media to counter the claims. He fired back, accusing people of using social media to spread “harmful narratives” against the state. He suggested that non-indigenes should promote the state instead of criticizing it and “insulting your host.”

Acapella then called out the commissioner for what he described as double standards based on ethnicity and origin. That didn’t go down well with some netizens, and the threats started rolling in.

Taking to X on Tuesday, the comedian wrote: “I’ve received several DMs and a few calls making empty threats… No Nigerian is more Nigerian than any other Nigerian.

He added that pointing out Nigeria’s problems doesn’t mean you’re against the country — in fact, it’s the first step to fixing things.

In a previous interview with Saturday Beats, the comedian noted that before fame, he tried his hands on different things till he found success in comedy.

He said, “Transitioning from music to comedy was not really hard for me. When I was doing music, I was part of an acapella group, and at the time, I was also doing comedy on the side. I was just a teenage boy trying out everything. It wasn’t like I had built a career in music. I was just doing music and comedy as well. But, along the line, I chose one and focused on it. That was how comedy became a priority for me.”
