Acclaimed Nollywood actress and activist Kate Henshaw, has been appointed by the Tap Initiative for Citizens’ Development as an ambassador for its citizen-led election monitoring platform, iReportINEC, ahead of Saturday’s Osun State governorship election.

The civil society organisation has already deployed the digital tool, covering more than 20 per cent of polling units in the state. iReportINEC enables ordinary citizens to document and report electoral incidents in real time, generating independent eyewitness accounts that promote transparency and accountability.

Executive Director Martin Obono described Henshaw’s appointment as strategic. “Kate Henshaw brings public trust, civic consciousness and a strong commitment to citizen participation. Her voice will help us take iReportINEC to millions of Nigerians,” he said.

Accepting the role, Henshaw emphasised shared responsibility for democracy. “Democracy belongs to all of us, and our responsibility does not end when we cast our votes. Citizens must pay attention, document what they witness and demand accountability,” she stated.

She also expressed excitement about encouraging young Nigerians to use technology responsibly to safeguard electoral integrity.

Henshaw’s track record includes public advocacy for voter participation. During the 2023 general elections, she highlighted accreditation challenges at her polling unit, underscoring the value of citizen documentation.

As ambassador, she will support awareness campaigns urging responsible reporting through the platform. Tap Initiative views the Osun deployment as a foundation for a nationwide citizen-monitoring network ahead of the 2027 general elections, covering all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The initiative aims to expand citizen engagement beyond voting and strengthen demands for accountable elections.
