The Coroner’s Court in Lagos has adjourned proceedings in the inquest into the death of 21-month-old Nkanu Adichie-Esege, son of renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her husband, Dr. Ivara Esege, until October 8, 2026.
The adjournment follows an order from the Lagos State High Court staying the inquest pending the determination of a judicial review application filed by Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital, where the toddler received treatment before his death on January 6/7, 2026.

At the resumed hearing before Coroner Magistrate Atinuke Adetunji at the Igbosere Magistrate’s Court, counsel to Euracare, Prof. Taiwo Osipitan (SAN), informed the court of the High Court’s suspension order.
The coroner subsequently adjourned the matter to allow for the resolution of the legal challenge to the inquest’s jurisdiction.
The case has drawn significant public attention since the family’s public statement alleging medical negligence at Euracare, including issues around sedation, oxygen supply, and post-procedure monitoring during an MRI and central line procedure.
The hospital has expressed sympathy while contesting aspects of the claims, and earlier investigations by regulatory bodies led to provisional suspensions of some medical personnel.
