Popular comedian and content creator Lasisi Elenu has launched a passionate call for urgent reform of Nigeria’s healthcare system, describing it as “extremely disturbing,” “shameful,” and “terrible.”
In a video addressed to President Bola Tinubu and the 36 state governors, Elenu recounted the painful experience of losing his mother, Grace Afolabi, in 2022.
He said the family struggled to find a hospital with available bed space, moving her from one facility to another as staff repeatedly turned them away. He also condemned the mass migration of doctors and the lack of basic resources such as oxygen, blood, and medicines that continue to claim lives.
Elenu’s outcry joins a growing list of high-profile voices highlighting the crisis. Author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie publicly alleged medical negligence after the death of her 21-month-old son in a Lagos hospital in early 2026.

Actress Tonto Dikeh previously blasted hospitals for refusing to treat a dying patient despite payment. Fashion entrepreneur Toyin Lawani has also spoken out after her own ordeal, while comedian Zicsaloma and socialite Cubana Chief Priest have shared frustrating experiences with delayed care and denied admissions.
These calls underscores a widely acknowledged problem: underfunding, staff shortages, and infrastructure decay that leave ordinary Nigerians vulnerable.
