Yeni Kuti, daughter of Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has fiercely shut down attempts to compare her father with modern-day superstars like Wizkid.
In recent TV appearances amid the heated online drama sparked by fan debates and family reactions, she warned that dragging Fela’s name into rivalries only tarnishes Nigeria’s image and disrespects icons.

Yeni stressed: “When two giants fight, it’s the ground that suffers.” She described the clashes as unnecessary, pointing out that Fela created Afrobeat, built a revolutionary movement with political depth, and remains unmatched 27+ years after his death. “He has done his part… we should respect that,” she said, calling Wizkid her “padi” but insisting legends deserve their own lane without competition.

The Kuti family, including Femi and Seun have echoed this noting that Fela is the template for Nigerian music, not a benchmark for today’s commercial hits. Recall that a comparison had gone viral on social media which went in for almost two weeks with the Wizkid FC calling the Nigerian superstar Wizkid the greatest of all. This made Seun Kuti fume and led Wizkid to declare himself a bigger artiste than the legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti. Many slammed Wizkid for making the statement and the timing of the comparison.
