Ayo Kuti, the son of Afrobeat legend Femi Kuti and grandson of the iconic pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has sparked a massive social media firestorm across Nigeria following his recent candid revelations regarding his personal life and family legacy.
In a statement that has since gone viral, Ayo disclosed that his decision to become sexually active at the age of 16 was fuelled by a competitive desire to “break a record” set by his father.
“The only reason I lost my virginity at 16 is because my dad told me that he lost his own at 17. So I said I have to be number one in my family. My dad is a bad boy,” he said.
The comment has triggered a wave of mixed reactions from Nigerians, with many pointing to the Kuti family’s long-standing reputation for non-conformity and “free-spirited” living. On social media, users were quick to link his behavior to his lineage, with one commenter, LEAD, stating, “This one na Felaburation oo, like grandfather like grandson.” Others echoed this sentiment, suggesting that such traits are simply “in the blood” and that “genes never lie.”

However, not all reactions were light-hearted. Some Nigerians expressed concern over what they perceived as a lack of moral guidance in wealthy or influential households. One user, Universal Digital Exchange, cautioned, “When money isn’t the problem… please pray life doesn’t give you problems money can’t solve in the form of children.”

While some teased Ayo for choosing a “peculiar” record to break, others defended the family’s lifestyle, noting that the Kutis have always lived by their own rules.
Regardless of the criticism, the consensus remains that the “Kalakuta” spirit is very much alive in the third generation. As one observer aptly put it: “The gene runs in the family from one generation to another.”
