Limpopo gave me a lot of money from ringback tones. We were making hundreds of thousands of dollars from it,” he said.

Kcee explained that during the peak of the song’s popularity, ringback tones were a dominant source of income for artists in Nigeria.

Fans would subscribe to have Limpopo play whenever their phone line was called, generating continuous revenue for the singer and his team.

However, this revelation from Kcee highlights how digital music distribution methods, particularly ringback tones, played a crucial role in shaping the Nigerian music industry’s revenue model before the widespread dominance of streaming platforms.

Released in 2013, Limpopo quickly became a cultural phenomenon, dominating airwaves and clubs across the country. The song’s infectious rhythm and catchy lyrics cemented Kcee’s place as one of the leading artistes of that era.
