
The Nigerian movie industry, Nollywood has been thrown into mourning over the death of some actors in a space of one month.
Odunayo Olufemi Oloto

Veteran Yoruba actor, Odunayo Olufemi Oloto, also known as Oloto, died on July 31 while at a hospital. Reports said he fell sick during church service and went across to a hospital opposite the church. Sadly, he collapsed while speaking with the receptionist and died immediately. His death was announced on August 1. Actors like Kunle Afod and Regina Chukwu shared emotional tributes.

Omotola Odunsi

On the same day, July 31, actress Omotola Odunsi, known for her role in the Yoruba movie Lisabi, also passed away. The news of her death came as another heavy blow to the industry, happening just hours after Oloto’s death.
Segun Remi (Chief Kanran)
Another sad news came on August 15 with the death of veteran actor Segun Remi, popularly called Chief Kanran. He died at the age of 72. The news was confirmed by entertainment journalist, Seun Oloketuyi, on Instagram. Chief Kanran was widely loved for his unique style and long years on stage and screen.

Seun Confirm

On August 14, actor Seun Confirm also died. Reports said he battled complications from a prostate condition before his death. Actress Jaiye Kuti announced the news on Instagram and prayed for his family to have strength in this difficult time.

Fabian Adibe

Fabian Adibe, the veteran Nollywood actor best known for his role in the classic TV series Things Fall Apart, has died.
Adibe, who celebrated his 80th birthday in February 2025, reportedly died peacefully around 2:30 am on Wednesday, according to a source close to the family.
He gained widespread admiration for his iconic portrayal in the adaptation of Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart, and his calm demeanor and powerful performances endeared him to generations of viewers.
Tom Njemanze

Although he died on July 19, veteran actor Tom Njemanze is still being remembered in August. He reportedly died after a battle with prostate cancer. His death added to the sorrow already facing the movie industry.
A Month of Loss
With the deaths of Oloto, Omotola Odunsi, Chief Kanran, Seun Confirm, and the recent remembrance of Tom Njemanze, Nollywood has been left in grief. Many actors and fans have described this August as one of the saddest periods for the industry.
