Prominent Hollywood actress Lupita Nyong’o has called for further research on fibroids.

She made this announcement via her Instagram platform on Tuesday, July 15. The 12 Years A Slave actress mentioned that the discovery of fibroids in her body affected her mental and emotional wellbeing, hence, it is pivotal for research work to be carried out to help women with these issues.

Also, she mentioned that this same ailment would affect at least 80% of black women and 70% of white women; hence, female pain shouldn’t be normalised.

Taking to IG, Nyong’o wrote in the caption, “We need to stop treating this massive issue like a series of unfortunate coincidences. We must reject the normalization of female pain.”

In partnership with the Foundation for Women’s Health, I’m launching the FWH x Lupita Nyong’o Uterine Fibroid Research Grant. @foundationwomenshealth will seek research proposals to develop minimally invasive or non-invasive treatments for uterine fibroids to reduce symptoms and improve quality of life for the 15 million patients suffering from this chronic condition in the U.S. alone,” her statement reads in part.

In a previous interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the Hollywood actress spoke about her ailment.

She candidly acknowledged both the mental strain and how her body reacted, highlighting that stress can influence hormone levels and contribute to fibroid growth.

I was mitigating my panic at all times because extreme failure and extreme success, the body doesn’t know the difference… it cost me physically. I was extremely thin. My body was ravaging itself, and I got fibroids,” she said.

Fibroids are benign muscular tumors in the uterus, influenced by hormones. Stress can elevate hormone levels—like estrogen—which may stimulate fibroid development or worsen symptoms.
