Michael Jackson Biopic Smashes Box Office Records with $220M Global Debut

Michael Jackson

The highly anticipated biopic Michael, centred on the life of Michael Jackson, has made a powerful debut, topping the North American box office with an impressive $97 million over the weekend, according to industry estimates.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua and distributed by Lionsgate, the film traces Jackson’s journey from a young performer to a global music legend. The late singer is portrayed by his nephew, Jaafar Jackson.

Box office analyst David A. Gross described the opening as record-breaking for a musical biopic. He noted that while audiences have responded positively largely due to the film’s nostalgic and uplifting tone critical reception has been less favourable.

According to Gross, many critics argue that the film glosses over the more controversial aspects of Jackson’s life, including past allegations of sexual misconduct. Despite this, a sequel is already reportedly in development.
