Mohbad’s Father Rejects Court-Selected DNA Lab, Demands Independent Test for Grandson’s Paternity

Joseph Aloba, father of late singer Ilerioluwa “Mohbad” Aloba, has strongly opposed the Ikorodu High Court’s suggestion to unilaterally select a DNA testing laboratory abroad, insisting he must conduct his own independent test to determine the paternity of his grandson, Liam.

At a recent court hearing, Aloba’s lawyer, Oladayo Ogungbe, argued that the labs previously nominated by Mohbad’s widow, Wunmi, and the Lagos State Welfare Department lack the capacity for tissue-based DNA extraction from embalmed remains.

He noted that Wunmi had already conducted a private DNA test, and Aloba wants a verified process involving samples from Mohbad’s body compared directly with Liam’s.

The court had earlier approved three overseas facilities in February 2026, one chosen by Aloba (DNA Diagnostics Center, USA), one by Wunmi (AlphaBiolabs, UK), and one independent lab selected via the Welfare Officer (Advanced Histopathology Laboratory, UK).

Two of the labs later declined, citing they do not perform post-mortem testing on embalmed bodies. The court then offered to appoint its own lab, but Aloba agreed only on the condition that he could select his preferred independent centre.

The case has been adjourned to May 5, 2026, pending Wunmi’s response on allowing samples from Liam.

Nearly three years after Mohbad’s death in September 2023, his body remains unburied as the family seeks clarity on the paternity dispute before proceeding with burial.
